street life - cold outside

The concept of identity is the foundation of my work. We spend so much of our lives crafting how we present our individual identities based on how we want others to perceive us. We as individuals also live within and form a wider Australian culture and the identity of this culture is what I explore through my art. It is only when we observe this complicated culture of ours with honesty that we can truly understand our own origins.

Transparency is at the core of my creative process. As a painter, I explore this transparency by overlaying multiple transparent layers of paint, revealing the process underneath and celebrating my mistakes. I believe that our mistakes are an important aspect of our past and help to define our identity and future evolution.

My exploration of transparency also interrogates who we are as individuals, who am I, why and where did I come from. Viewing one's self with honesty can present confronting realisations. However this may be necessary to understand why we are who we are and to define our individual intentions or purpose, even if previously unconsidered. My art assists me in understanding who I am, and who I wish to be.
